Hatman and Indigo

Over the last year and a half I’ve had the wonderful opportunity of working on some issues for the Hatman and Indigo webcomic series (Three Twins). The Halloween special I worked on has just recently been posted.

It is really interesting experience drawing for someone else’s comic. In some ways it very freeing, because 1: deadlines force me to stay on track, 2: someone else is calling the shots. I turn in a draft, and redraw what’s needed. I feel like my own projects can get drawn out (no pun intended), because I’m not as good at deciding when things are finished :P

I’m currently working on a new issue for them in a different style, it’s really fun getting to explore the characters in a style that more natural for me :)

Finished Dollhouse

Finally :)

I finished the dollhouse it time for the Miniature Fair. It was really exciting getting to meet with other people in the area, and see the kind of rooms and houses they had done. The final two weeks of finishing it were really intense, and my original ideas changed a lot as I just tried to get everything done. Upstairs was an attic bedroom. Downstairs was the kitchen and virtual-reality computer. It’s nice being done :P

Lesson 4

I feel like I've been going a little crazy on Lesson 4, so I've decided this is good enough for now, and I'm going to move on to Lesson 5 .

Dollhouse

I realized that there is a miniatures fair in October, so I decided to just focus in trying to finish the Dollhouse itself.

The attic is going to be the most falling apart part of the house, so I tore the wallpaper, and distressed it.

The wood floor took ages; I ended up using coffee stir sticks.

I bought clay and stuff to make my own characters. But at this point in terms of the dollhouse itself I’m thinking of maybe using these army men. I found them at the Dollar Tree, there were 4 in a pack, but they were all molded green, so I painted them.

Lock and Watches 2

Got an old school phone, just took it apart, and have found this awesome piece that I think might actually work better for the virtual reality computer.

Here is what I had been looking at for the full room computer:

But I'm starting to think something a lot more simple might work better visually, so I tried making a quick mock up to get a feel for a new design.

More Lesson 4 Practise

The rabbit's line of action is still off, as well as the angle of the arms. Head should be set farther back, giving a nice curved shape to the back.

The ducks head is closer on this try, but the beak should be smaller and angled up more, the left hand should be closer to the body, and the body should be more pair shaped

The shape is getting closer, the curve of the body is right, and the hands and feet are just a little off. The axis on the head is wrong, though, he needs to be looking slightly more down and profiled. The nose needs to patrude a bit more too.

Lock and Watches

My original idea was that the fan would be a kind of conductor (with the copper around it) attached to both the solar panel, and the water.

But I ended just buying the cheapest dollhouse I could find, so I might decide to go with aesthetics instead of pretend functionality.

I’m kind liking the idea of having the fan facing inward (to the attic), but I saw Wal-Mart had some of those solar paneled outdoor lights on sale for 3 dollars, so maybe I'll get a few to take apart and then decide :P

Also, I found this awesome piece from the radio, I’m thinking of modifying it for a sorta computer. Sweet.

House of Five Leaves

I just watched the first episode, and granted it was mostly a lot of talking introducing all the characters, but I didn’t mind the slow pacing, and I am really digging the designs. They aren't particularly attractive per se, but there is something about their sharp profiles, and large pupils and that low slice of a mouth. It was kinda enthralling to watch. I'm curious to see how the next episode is.

Menew

Plug for Menew, I had the honor of getting to help on this music video a while back, and now their new album is going to be released soon. So, yes, this doesn't have anything to do with animation, but yay for good music : )

Sketch

Experimenting with the construction I've been working on.

Lesson 4

I'm clearly having issues with getting the line of action right, but I'm getting a little closer to the right mass.

Squeakqual

I don't know why I'm still on a Chipmunks kick, I think that movie must have burned itself into my brain, cause I saw a preview recently, and Eleanor's character had a different design then she had in the movie. This is the way she looked in the trailer.

This is the way she looked in the same scene in the movie. What happened? Did somebody say notch up the crazy eyes, kids love that?

I'm wondering how late into making the movie it was, before the finalized her character design.

Sour Candy

This was my final project for the last class I took at the Academy of Art. It was wierd being in an Intro to Hand Animation Class, and having alot of the students taking the class because it was required for their CG degree.

You had students faking stuff in Flash, tweening and simply moving a cut object around because they didn't want to take the time to animate frame by frame. One student actually commented on how they couldn't understand why students would want to hand animate, when the computer could just render a CG object to look 2D. It was very depressing.

Anywho, I think it's pretty obvious from this animation, how much I was flailing about in class. I'm really excited to be doing John's Animation School, hopefully it will help me with the fundamentals that I'm so clearly lacking.

Lesson 1 - Second Try

The mass of the shapes and the angle of the axis on the shapes is still off, and they feels pretty stiff, but better then my first try.
